2016: A Year In Disney

As 2016 is coming to a close, I'd like to look at the amazing feat Disney managed to pull off this year across the board. It was an absolutely brilliant year for the world's happiest company. The company slayed at the box office, television was on point, and the parks are improving. Things are certainly on the up and up for this wonderful organization. Before 2016 closes though, let's look at how historic this year really was.

Back in June, I posted a little piece about the 4 home runs to date in 2016. That bit was written before the Dory movie came out, before Doctor Strange, before Moana, and before the latest Star Wars film. Needless to say, it has gotten even more promising since that post. In order to not sound redundant, I will just say that those 4 home runs were amazing and I recommend them strongly. The 4 were the Lion Guard, Zootopia, Captain America: Civil War, and the Jungle Book.

Before moving on to the second half of the year, I would like to go a bit further on how obsessed my children are with the Lion Guard. My kids love the show. This is especially true for our 4 year old son, Noland Jr. He has about 1/4 of the stuff he owns currently as Lion Guard related. The kid adores the show and the characters. Jr. is constantly trying to acquire new Lion Guard materials. It is a cool show for us too, because it is a bridge from the classic movie of our childhood, the Lion King. Just a brilliantly done show that hasn't lost any traction in our household.

Now onto the newer stuff...

Finding Dory was another smash hit for Disney and I too enjoyed the movie. I did not enjoy it as much as some people, but it was a great movie. The movie had really strong new characters and is certainly something Disney will continue to cash in on. It was not a failure by any stretch of the imagination and helped to grow the brand overall. Like I said, I enjoyed the movie and most enjoyed it even more than I did.

To me, perhaps the biggest hit and certainly the biggest surprise of the year was Moana. Now, I thought Moana would be really good, but it surpassed every expectation I had of the movie. After seeing Zootopia, I thought there was no way an animated movie could top that in the same year, but Moana was right up there. This movie was darn close to flawless and you must see it if you have not already. It will be interesting to see how the hype around this movie proceeds as time moves on.

Admittedly, I have not seen Doctor Strange or the latest Star Wars yet, but they have been hits. I have also heard terrific things from all that have seen those titles.

2016 also was the year we once again had Disney passes and there are some exciting things going on at the parks. Nothing at Disney World is as exciting as the additional hours at my favorite park, Animal Kingdom. Although I hear next year will be even bigger for this park and Disney World in general. Before we get to next year though, let's talk about one more thing for 2016.

Each year, we do a Disney countdown for characters and this year I decided to include more family. We had 11 family members each submit their top 50 solely Disney characters, and top 50 pixar characters as well. 50 points were awarded for #1 and 1 point for #50 for each list. Here are the top finishers after the vote and who the 4 in my immediate family voted for as their 5 favorites (for Eli we scattered toys and pictures and took them away after he chose somebody).

Overall Disney
#1 Simba
#2 Mickey Mouse
#3 Donald Duck
#4 Pooh
#5 Jiminy Cricket

Robinson Top 5 1-5
Me: Jiminy Cricket, Baloo, Pooh, Pumba, Donald Duck
Jenna: Pooh, Mickey Mouse, Aladdin, Rapunzel, Simba
Jr: Kion, Mickey Mouse, Bunga, Donald Duck, Nick Wilde
Eli: Mickey Mouse, Tigger, Pooh, Piglet, Kion

Overall Pixar
#1 Nemo
#2 Dory
#3 Woody
#4 Crush
#5 Squirt

Robinson Top 5 1-5
Me: Buzz, Crush, Rex, Bullseye, Marlin
Jenna: Woody, Buzz, Lightning McQueen, Marlin, Rex
Jr.: Buzz, Lightning McQueen, Mater, Woody, Rex
Eli: Buzz,Woody, Crush, Lightning McQueen, Squirt

As you can see sometimes the slam dunk winner in the house loses out overall. This was most true with Pixar as Buzz finished 1st for all 3 boys, and 2nd for Jenna. However, my brother and his kids didn't include Buzz and he finished outside the top 5. Crazy!!!!

I sure will have fun comparing the lists as they come out each year. It was a cool project that resulted in a fun coloring book for the kids.

This year in Disney was awesome! I have a feeling that next year could be even better! You will be able to follow our Disney adventures for 2017 right here.

Until next time, see you real soon!!!!

2015 Disney Character Rankings (90-81)

A few weeks back, I started an updated Disney character countdown. The preview was followed by the rankings for 102-91. Today we continue the countdown.....

Top Disney Characters 90-81

Previous Ranking: 64
J. Thaddeus Toad is a Disney legend and had this list been made 20 years ago, a top 50 ranking would have been easily justified. However, now many have no idea who Mr. Toad is. His ride has been replaced at Disney World and this photo is the only memory of it existing. Him handing over the deed of the ride to a character from the much more popular Winnie the Pooh franchise should tell you all you need to know about how he has faded from the parks. Still worthy of a spot on the countdown, that may not be true in a year or so.

Previously Unranked
Chip Potts is one of the most memorable characters from one of Disney's best movies. If the movies were ranked by a large group of people, I think this would finish between 2nd and 5th for most popular movie. It happened to have some of the best and most memorable characters as well. One of those characters was the little chipped cup named Chip. He has virtually no presence in the parks, but his part in the mega-hit earns him a spot here at 89.

Previous Ranking: 56
Scrooge falls more than 30 spots and it is because he doesn't really have a presence for Disney anymore. Sure, kids can watch DuckTales reruns and they are still fantastic, but he hasn't been in anything new in over a decade. Other than Mickey's Christmas Carol he really isn't seen anymore ever. At the parks he can be seen at Christmas time and that is it. He still belongs on the the list though because people still love DuckTales and the line to see him at Mickey's Holiday Party are insane.

Previous Ranking: 58
I do not know anyone who has this movie rated as their number 1. It is more recent though and most kids do know it. Flik also is the main character in the Bug's Life show in Disney's Animal Kingdom. Because of that show and him being the main character in the movie he belongs on the list. However, if that show inside the tree of life were to be replaced or removed as some suggest, then he will no longer be on this list. Flik drops 29 spots, but will stay on this list so long as that show stays in a Disney Park.

Previous Ranking: 82
The main bad guy in Toy Story 3 is shown he strapped to the front of Sid's truck which happened at the end of the movie. He is quite popular among Toy Story fans, but he only was in the final movie of the series (so far). He cannot be ranked as high as most characters from the franchise and I have left him ranked in the 80s for a 2nd time. This is a good spot for him and I think he will always be somewhere from 80-100 unless he makes another appearance or other characters emerge.

85. Iago
Previous Ranking: 78
Iago had a slight drop to 85 on the countdown this year. He is an incredibly memorable character for an iconic movie franchise, but doesn't have the staying power of some others. Iago is one that won't really be booted from this countdown having appeared in all 3 movies and the TV Show, but he will never be as high as the genie or other characters from the movie. The biggest reason for this is that Iago has 0 presence at the parks unlike the characters from Aladdin that will finish higher than him.

Previous Ranking: 76
Zazu is a character that everyone loves from Disney's most popular movie. It also happens to be my older son's favorite movie and he loves Zazu. Because he is such a major piece of Disney's top film, it would be hard for him to be removed from the countdown. However, similar to Iago with Aladdin, other characters from Lion King will always be higher than Zazu. He just will not be as popular as the others and has no presence at the parks still.

83. Mater
Previously Unranked
There is really no good reason for not having mater in the 1st countdown. The only reason he was not in that countdown is because I am not a fan of the Cars franchise. That franchise though has two movies and merchandise galore. People love Mater and he is the 2nd most popular character from the movie. You can also see him at Disney's Hollywood Studios. Mater absolutely belongs on this countdown and an argument could be made for him being higher than he is.

Previously Unranked
Cogsworth is the clock that turns into a human in Beauty and the Beast. He was a major character in the film, but not as major as his best friend Lumiere. He was like Lumiere's side kick/rival of sorts. However, he is not as memorable which is why he is much lower on the countdown. That being said, he certainly belongs and fits nicely at #82.

81. Figaro
Previous Ranking: 95
Figaro has been re-branded from the cat of Gepetto to the cat of Minnie Mouse. While I didn't think so the last time I did rankings, that actually makes Figaro even more popular than he was before. This character is known to multiple generations of Disney fans. This ranking at 81 might even still be too low. He is a strong personality in the Disney Universe when you think about it.

Stay tuned for our next ranking of characters 80-71 in a few weeks. Next week, we will do a zoo review of Sarasota Jungle Gardens.

2015 Disney Character Rankings (102-91)

Last week, we started another countdown preview of Disney characters for this year. The guidelines have been established and it is time to actually start the countdown. So without further ado...

Top 102 Characters in Disney for 2015

Previously Unranked
In the movie Wreck-It Ralph, Ralph comes from the game Fix-It Felix, Jr., a game in which Felix is the hero. That is what set the whole movie into motion. He is helpful and loved by all. Felix is also an unforgettable character from the movie and central to the story. While he isn't as key as Venellope and Ralph, he deserves a spot on the list. The fact that he has no presence at the parks though keeps him from getting any higher than this bottom spot. All that being said he is the hero in a very recent Disney movie and all the kids know him. He deserves inclusion and makes it here at 102.

Previously Unranked
Rajah was not included last time and that was a mistake on my part. There is a possibility that he will soar up this list in October with Aladdin releasing from the vault. He is the lovable tiger and pet of Princess Jasmine in the movie franchise. While he is not incredibly central to the story and while he has no presence at the parks, he is a memorable character from one of Disney's most iconic films. This main film is in many people's top 5, including being my wife's favorite. Rajah helps to make that possible. The fact that he was in one of the more popular movies, that isn't going anywhere, helps Rajah debut on this list. It helps more that there were two sequels that included Rajah as well. The only question is, where does he go from here.

Previously Unranked
Kala was a near miss the last time the list came out and she was acknowledged as an honorable mention. This time I realized my mistake after becoming more fascinated with the Tarzan film. Kala rescued Tarzan and the story does not succeed without Kala. She is absolutely central to the story as Tarzan's gorilla mother. Most of the fantastic songs are about her and Tarzan's relationship. This character absolutely belongs on the list and perhaps should be even higher than she is. The lack of presence at the parks prevents her from being higher, but I personally would love to see Tarzan rocks come back and move over to Hollywood Studios replacing either the Beauty and the Beast show or the Frozen Sing-Along. Hey, a guy can hope can't he?

Previous Ranking: 85
The first repeat offender on this list is the alleycat, Thomas O'Malley. This alleycat with his own theme song has dropped 14 spots and landed at #99. It is a good spot for Thomas who has no presence in the parks, but was a hero in the movie. Not only was he a hero, but he was voiced by Disney legend Phil Harris. Additionally, as I said before he has his own theme song. That theme song and his role in the movie keep him on the list here at 99. His buddy scat cat missed again, but O'Malley returns again to the list.

Previous Ranking: 70
Pegasus is Hercules' winged horse and best friend in the movie. He is very key and central to the movies storyline. While he is well known outside the Disney universe, he is also very key in it. This was a very popular movie as well. He absolutely deserves inclusion. However, he dropped 28 spots because he doesn't talk, there are more popular movies, and he has no presence at the parks. While he has no presence at the parks he is a lovable character. Such a lovable character that Disney sells his baby plush at the parks. That marketability and reliability are what help keep Pegasus on this list. He dropped quite a bit, but Pegasus stays strong at 98.

Previously Unranked
Venellope is the star of the game Sugar Rush and of course the movie Wreck-It Ralph. She ends up being Ralph's best friend in the movie and wins the race against the evil King Candy/Turbo. Her character is vital in one of Disney's most recent hits and she is in many of the parades that Disney World now offers. In addition to that, she is available with Ralph at Hollywood Studios to meet in person. Venellope is an easy addition to this list now that video game characters are included.
Note: She has since been removed from the meet and greet  @ Hollywood Studios after I wrote this post and will therefore likely drop down the list the next time these characters are ranked.

Previously Unranked
Baymax is new to the countdown because he wasn't a character the last time there was a countdown. The previous countdown was before Big Hero 6 even came out in theaters. Now that it is out, he had to be included. The question became where to rank Baymax. Here at 96 is a good starting spot. In this spot, he is on the countdown, but he isn't too high yet. It is important to find out if Baymax will have the staying power or if he is just the newest character that Disney has to offer. We do know that you can meet him and Hiro at Disney's Hollywood Studios though.

Previous Ranking: 84
This character has staying power and still has a presence at the Disney theme parks. Not only is he part of multiple movies and shows, but he is a star of the Three Caballeros ride. This cigar smoking friend of Donald is a Disney legend that stays on the list because he is a legend. His star is fading though and he may fall off the list next time if Disney doesn't start using him more again.

Previous Ranking: 83
See the write-up for Jose, but add that he does the majority of the singing during the ride and you will see why Panchito is 94 while Jose is 95. Panchito is Jose's main ally and of course the sombrero wearing bird from the photo above.

Previous Ranking: 59
Maximus is a key character from the 2010 hit Tangled. The story and movie would struggle a bit without him, but he was not the main character in the movie. Additionally, other than a small part in the Festival of Fantasy parade, he has no presence in the parks. That being said he is a fantastic character from a popular movie that absolutely belongs on this list. I just had him a bit too high due to my personal affinity for the character. He probably belongs here in the 90s though and not in the 50s where I had him last time.

Previous Ranking: 61
Last time around, I gave Hopper a lot of praise and stated why he was one of my favorite characters. He is a fantastic character and A Bug's Life would have been much worse without him, but he should not have been as high as I had him. Despite me thinking he is one of Disney's best villains, many others do not see him that way. In fact, a lot of people do not care much for this movie. While he is a major character in the attraction at Animal Kingdom as well, a lot of people skip the attraction when visiting the park. This movie becomes less and less popular as time goes on. I fear that people won't even know who Hopper is in the near future. There are a lot of kids that could care less about Hopper and he can't rank in the Top 75 because of that. He does have a presence though and he is a strong character which allows him to stay on the list.

Previous Ranking: 65
Hamm is one of the main characters in one of Disney's most popular franchises. He is the first of many Toy Story characters to appear on this list. There are at least 8 other Toy Story characters that will appear in this countdown and there could probably be even more. I decided to rank him lower though than the others because it is possible for the movies to succeed without him more so than the other characters. Additionally, he has very little presence himself while the others have much more. You can argue that the army men and a few other Toy Story characters who didn't make it, deserve it more than Hamm. It is an argument I am not going to make though, as I am quite satisfied with Hamm closing out the first group on the countdown.

Next week, we will do characters 90-81. Have a great weekend.

2015 Disney Character Rankings Preview

Last year around this time, I ranked the Top 101 Disney Characters. This year I am going to do it again, but this time with a few new criteria. Before we get into the new criteria though, lets take a look back at last year's rankings. Those rankings will only be posted in this piece.
10-1

Now, for the new criteria. First, I had to eliminate all biases that I have fully. That means that as much as I love Baloo, I have to be honest and admit that at this point he isn't a Top 10 character to the Disney Brand. This time I focused more on what they mean to Disney right now. Star Wars and Marvel characters are still not included. However, the humans that were left out before are still left out. They are left out with the exceptions of genies and fairies that were ineligible last time. Therefore, you will eventually see Tink on this list. Last year, I also left the Beauty and the Beast characters off because they were eventually humans. This year they are included since they were not humans for the majority of the movies. Finally, I also decided to include the Wreck-It Ralph characters because they are video game characters and not humans. They are basically the same as Woody and Buzz from that aspect. Due to their inclusion, I decided to expand the list to 102 to give one more character the chance to make the list.

Each character is ranked based on the greatness of the character and what they mean to Disney today. That means what is their influence and popularity in the United States. However, staying power does matter so those that have had influence longer will get credit for that. How are they used in movies and television as well as at the parks? How well they are known and how much they associate with the Disney brand? Believe it or not there was a lot of movement from the last year. 15 characters fell out of the rankings entirely.

We will start with those that fell out of the rankings from last year.....

Kit Cloudkicker would make my personal list and my son's list anytime. In fact, he would be in each of our Top 20, but he has no influence on the brand today at all. No influence unless you count the TaleSpin DVDs (which we of course have. Huge in the 90s, not known today. He probably shouldn't have been on the list last year and certainly not with the additional characters being included.

Brer Bear was a near miss for this list. He is included on the Splash Mountain ride, but is not a main character on the ride. He is Brer Fox's sidekick and most people do not have any idea who he is even after the ride. His movie cannot be found anywhere and he does not have a meet and greet. So while Brer Fox managed to stay on the countdown, Brer Bear did not. He would have been #103 though if we went that far.

Miss Bianca (98)
Doesn't really make sense now, but Miss Bianca was on the list and not Bernard. They had the same impact on the universe, so it doesn't really make sense to have one without the other. Due to the lack of staying power of these movies, it doesn't really make sense to have either on this countdown. These characters have no presence in the park and they are unknown to most youngsters today. Aweseome yes, but not top 100 Disney Characters.

Perdita (97)
Perdita was the female lead in the 101 Dalmatians movie and all of the sequels. She is a well known and good character. The movie was also recently released from the vault which adds to her appeal. However, she was not as central to the movie as Pongo and mainly was just his love interest in the movie. She didn't do quite as much as Pongo. He is debatable to make this list. Perdita does not have much of an argument when you consider the characters added. This character has 0 presence in the parks and the movie is not one of the most popular that Disney made. She becomes less known each year. While most could name Pongo and some of the pups, not many can name Perdita and she has to drop off. That being said, she would still make it if the list were to 110. She was also included before the Wreck-It Ralph characters were added.

Gopher (96)
Gopher from Winnie the Pooh is one of my favorite Disney characters of all-time. I have always liked him. However, in taking my bias out, he doesn't really belong on this list. He was not in the most recent Winnie the Pooh movie and the only signs of him seem to be on the ride at Magic Kingdom. On that ride he doesn't seem to be a single character as much as one of many gophers either. It has been 10 years since Gopher has made an appearance and it appears that Disney has no plans to use the character. He is the least vital character from the franchise and is unused in Disney media today. There is no way he can remain on the list.

Sarabi (94)
This was a really tough cut from the list, but somebody had to go to make room for the new arrivals. Despite being Simba's mom, Sarabi did not play a major role in the movie. Mufasa imparted all of the life lessons until he died and Simba ran away. After he ran away Simba was raised by Timon and Pumba and not Sarabi. An awesome character and from perhaps the best movie Disney made, but just misses the countdown this time.

Henry Hugglemonster (93)
Henry Hugglemonster is a newer character and he has his own show, so it may be surprising to see him dropped from the countdown. However, his show is not one of the main shows on Disney Jr. The main shows are Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Sofia the First, Doc McStuffins, and Jake and the Neverland Pirates. All characters from those shows are more known and popular than Henry. In fact, Sheriff Callie is probably more popular and likely should have been selected instead of Henry last time. He is a great character, but not quite the caliber of character that belongs on this list.

Cri-Kee (92)
Mulan is one of the better Disney movies which is saying a lot. Cri-Kee was a very memorable character from that movie and one of my personal favorites. That being said, did he really belong on the list? He probably did not belong to be honest. The little cricket isn't even one of the most memorable bugs in Disney movies. You can't really rank him ahead of the Bug's Life characters that have a presence (albeit small) in a Disney them park. I did and that was a mistake that I made due to my affinity for this character. Taking bias out of it, Cri-Kee does not belong on the list.

Pongo (91)
Pongo was one of the toughest cuts from the list. He is #104 and was very close to making the list. While he has a stronger case than Perdita, he misses the list for the same reasons he does. The movie is not as popular as some others like Toy Story and he has no presence in the parks. Many youngsters do not know Pongo making him an easier cut.

Tod (88)
Tod being ranked and not Copper made little sense as they each played a major role in the Fox and the Hound. That being said, Tod did deserve to be ranked higher as he was slightly more featured in the movie. This movie that is not very popular today and few children know about. It is also a movie that has 0 presence in the parks. It is hard to justify either the fox or the hound belonging on this list when you really think about it.

Tantor (87)
Tantor was one of the major characters in Tarzan. However, he was not central to the story and he has no current presence in the parks. He was previously ranked ahead of Kerchak and Kala and that was wrong. My bias got the best of me by putting Tantor so high on the countdown. Although I still contend that he should have been on it though. With 15 characters dropping out though to make room for the new arrivals, he had to go.

Special Agent Oso (79)
Special Agent Oso did not follow the three special steps for staying on the countdown. Step one was having a current show, but Oso's last new episode recorded in 2012. Step two was to have a presence at the parks and Oso is no longer available for meet and greets. Step three was to have a prime TV spot and the episodes of Oso replaying are becoming more and more rare. Therefore, Oso has been removed from the countdown.

Chesire Cat (67)
This cat is one I don't think a lot of people know the name to. It is just the creepy cat from Alice to most. He has no presence in the parks other than some weird apparel and is unfamiliar to many. Additionally, a lot of Disney fans just think he is a weird character. I can't even remember what he does in the movie, but I know he is in it.

LaunchPad McQuack (57)
One minute I am proposing a meet and greet with LaunchPad and the next I am taking him off of my top characters countdown. What?!?! I know it may seem confusing, but I am being consistent in eliminating my bias here. As much as I love LaunchPad and as big a character as I think he is, I must admit that they don't use him anymore. The guy hasn't been used since the early 90s it seems. He was as hot as they came in the 90s as far as characters go, but after about 1996 just disappeared from Disney productions. Tough to rank that in the list. He certainly should not have been all the way up at 57. If the list was expanded to 125 than he'd possibly still make it.

The one character more overranked than LaunchPad before was his ally Darkwing Duck. Darkwing was amazing and perhaps on the greatest show Disney ever produced, but that show ended in 1992. It is now 2015 and this character doesn't have staying lasting for those 23 years. Again, in the Top 125 maybe, but 47 was way too high. Disney should recreate the show though because Darkwing is really a top 15 character on cool factor, but falls out due to lack of use in the current Disney landscape.

Does Baymax make his debut on the list after the release of Big Hero 6?
Where do the Beauty and the Beast Characters Rank?
Is Tinkerbell in the Top 5?
You will have to tune into the countdown to find out. Also stay tuned for some posts from Jenna and some baby updates coming soon.....
